If Your Web Designer’s Site Doesn’t Rank Highly In The Search Engines, Don’t Expect Yours To Either…

Ready for a little bit of search engine optimization 101?

As you’ve probably noticed as you’ve read past blog articles here, it’s pretty obvious that we take a really simple, holistic approach to SEO around here.  It’s not about doing this little tweak or implementing that little trick; instead, it’s all about designing websites the right way the first time and then giving visitors and search engines exactly what they want from that point on—lots and lots of top quality original content.

Yeah, there are a few other things you can do as well to help the process along—earning relevant links from other quality sites in a natural, organic way is one.  Getting Meta data like title tags accurate and correct for each page on your website is another (this is usually one of those good design practices mentioned earlier).

It’s all simple enough, don’t you think?

Well, here’s the definitive hit or miss test you need to dial up to see if your prospective web designer knows how to get all of this stuff right.  It’s easy:  do a test search for your designer’s website using some of the most obvious search terms that they should rank for highly. Search for things like:

The web designer’s name or company name (i.e. “Sleepless Media”). This is a gimmie, and if they’re not at the top of the listings for this search query, they’re definitely doing something wrong when it comes to optimization.

A local based search (i.e. “Santa Cruz web development”). Depending on the level of competition out there, this can start to get a little bit more difficult to rank highly for—but either way, if your prospective web design company doesn’t come up towards the top of the list for a local based search like this, again, there’s trouble in paradise.

While you do these kinds of searches, also take a look at the descriptions and search listing titles that come up for the web design company that you’re thinking about hiring—they should be feathered with good and relevant keywords, and they should also be catchy enough to get the click.  This is good practice when it comes to SEO.  A good web designer will certainly get this right most of the time.

With search, like anything in life, there are no guarantees.

Don’t fall for a web designer that promises you number one results in the search engines…they might be good, but no one has control over Google or the other search engines like that to be able to guarantee such results.  Use the common sense test here.  If it sound too good to be true, it probably is.

And don’t expect your web designer to rank at the top globally.  In other words, if you search for the term “web design,” there are millions and millions of different companies around the world that will come up.  Your designer isn’t going to be one of the top results here—but after all, that’s not how people search in the real world anyway.  Again, use the common sense test.

A professional web designer that really gets SEO will not only design the right way, they’ll also be able to provide all kinds of excellent advice on what it takes to rank highly for your niche or specialty.  You can own your own small corner of the web.  But remember, in order to do this, you’ve got to rely on the help of a web designer that is proven to own theirs as well.
